Bell came from an impoverished farming family based in San Bernardino, California. He made ends meet by growing, harvesting, and selling potatoes and strawberries. Later, he went on to assist his aunt in running her small bakery. It was working with his aunt that made Bell realize his passion for cooking and serving great food, apart from spurring his entrepreneurial spirit.
In 1946, after World War II ended, 23-year-old Bell,
who had served as a marine returned to his home town. Initially, he
wanted to a set up a business related to recreation, which was starting
to look up after the war. His first idea was to open a miniature golf
course. However, financial constraints led him to open a hot dog stand
instead, which he called 'Bell's Drive-In'. It was a one person operated
food stand which sold hamburgers and hot dogs. In his business, Bell
incorporated the valuable lessons he had learnt in ordering, portioning,
cooking, and serving, while working as a marine...
